Passengers arrive excited, dressed comfortably (and often in their favourite outfits), cameras in hand and ready for the adventure ahead. Some travel from abroad, while others come from different parts of Spain. But they all have one thing in common: the excitement of watching a giant balloon slowly come to life right in front of them.

And yes… you’ll have to wake up early. We won’t pretend otherwise. But we can tell you this: we’ve never met anyone who, after landing, wished they’d stayed in bed. Sunrise is the safest and most beautiful time to fly, and when you see the first rays of sunlight lighting up the Aqueduct, the Cathedral and the Alcázar, you’ll understand why the early start is so worth it.

Watching the balloon being inflated is part of the experience itself. As the colours begin to fill the sky and the sun slowly rises over the city, there’s a moment that simply has to be experienced to be understood.

Then comes the silence. Only the sound of the burner breaks the calm as Segovia stretches out beneath your feet.

The Segovia Hot Air Balloon Festival: Three Days When the Sky Fills with Colour

If there’s one date that hot air balloon enthusiasts look forward to every year, it’s the Segovia Hot Air Balloon Festival. Held every July, it transforms the city into one of the most spectacular ballooning destinations in Spain.

For three days, dozens of balloons take off at sunrise from the same launch field, while pilots from different countries compete in a variety of ballooning challenges and competitions.

But the festival is much more than the morning flights. Visitors can also enjoy family-friendly activities, afternoon competitions, live music, and a lively atmosphere that fills Segovia with balloon lovers and visitors from all over.

This year, the festival will take place on 17, 18 and 19 July, offering the perfect opportunity to experience Segovia from the sky, or simply enjoy the spectacle from the ground.
